About Druk Melbourne Archery Club
Our story
Druk Melbourne Archery Club was founded by members of the Bhutanese community in Melbourne who share a passion for Bhutanese traditional archery. Our members began playing together around 2018 and have competed regularly ever since.
Our members are experienced and highly skilled archers. Most grew up with archery in Bhutan and have been shooting for most of their lives. We know the discipline, traditions and etiquette of the sport, and we take the responsibilities that come with it seriously. They are working professionals and family people who hold themselves to high standards, both on and off the range.
More Than a Sport. A Connection to Home.
For us, the club is much more than a sporting group. It is a place where Bhutanese people living in Australia stay connected to their homeland, their culture and one another. A match day brings friends and families together, and it is often where newcomers to Melbourne first find a sense of belonging.
Why we started the club
When people settle far from home, some of the things they miss most are the traditions that were once part of everyday life. For Bhutanese people, archery is one of those traditions. It carries memories of village gatherings, festivals, friendship and family, and it remains one of the clearest expressions of who we are.
We founded the club to keep that connection alive. It brings the Bhutanese community together, keeps our culture and traditions strong, and keeps Bhutan's national sport thriving outside Bhutan, all in an atmosphere of friendship, respect and discipline.
Our cultural heritage
Archery is Bhutan's national sport and one of the clearest expressions of who we are. The customs that surround it — traditional dress, songs, the friendly rivalry between teams and the meals we share — are as much a part of our club as the shooting itself.
Our community
Our members are working professionals and family people. Match days bring together archers, partners, children, grandparents and friends, and welcome people who are new to Melbourne. The club connects generations through a tradition that each of them can share.
Our values
- Respect — for one another, for the sport and for its traditions
- Discipline — the focus and self-control that precision archery demands
- Safety — high standards on the range, every time
- Friendship — rivalry on the range, family off it
- Heritage — keeping Bhutanese culture strong for the next generation
Our vision for the future
A permanent, well-built range would allow us to continue this tradition properly here in Australia.
As the club grows, we hope to strengthen this tradition and work towards a permanent, purpose-built range that can serve the community for generations to come.
